چکیده

This paper describes observed changes in surface winds, sea surface temperature (SST) and the volume of water warmer than 20 C (WWV) in the equatorial Paciic Ocean for the period 1980{99. The purpose is to test recent hypotheses about the relationship between variations in WWV and the El Ni~ no/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle. Our results connrm inferences based on theory, models, and previous empirical analyses using proxy data (namely sea level) that ENSO involves a recharge and discharge of WWV along the equator, and that the cyclic nature of ENSO results from a disequilibrium between zonal winds and zonal mean thermocline depth. We also nd that the magnitude of ENSO SST anomalies is directly related to the magnitude of zonal mean WWV anomalies. Furthermore, for a given change in equatorial WWV, the corresponding warm El Ni~ no SST anomalies are larger than the corresponding cold La Ni~ na anomalies. This asymmetry between the warm and cold phases of the ENSO cycle implies diierences in the relative importance of physical processes controlling SST during El Ni~ no and La Ni~ na events.

The 1990 { 1995 El Ni ~ no - Southern Oscillation Event : Longest on recordKevin

The tendency for more frequent El Ni~ no events and fewer La Ni~ na events since the late 1970's has been linked to decadal changes in climate throughout the Paciic basin. Aspects of the most recent warming in the tropical Paciic from 1990 to 1995, which are connected to but not synonymous with El Ni~ no, are unprecedented in the climate record of the past 113 years. There is a distinction betw...

Phytoplankton abundances and community structure in the equatorial Pacific

In both the warm pool region and the high-nutrient low-chlorophyll (HNLC) region of the equatorial Pacific, the phytoplankton community is dominated by high concentrations of picophytoplankton regardless of whether El Ni * no, La Ni * na or normal conditions prevail. Flow cytometry measurements indicate that the picoplankton community consists of two species of prokaryotes, Prochlorococcus and ...

تاثیرپذیری رخداد بیماری مالاریا در ایران از شاخص اقلیمی ENSO

Background and Objective: Malaria is a disease affecting 300–500 million people in tropical and subtropical regions and causes approximately 2.7 million deaths annually. Currently, no vaccine protects against malaria and resistance to anti-malaria drugs such as chloroquine is increasing and spreading geographically. Moreover, anti-malarial drugs are expensive and often unaffordable to low-incom...

ENSO Asymmetry in CMIP5 Models

The El Ni~ no–La Ni~ na asymmetry is evaluated in 14 coupled models from phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5). The results show that an underestimate of ENSO asymmetry, a common problem noted in CMIP3 models, remains a common problem in CMIP5 coupled models. The weaker ENSO asymmetry in the models primarily results from a weaker SST warm anomaly over the eastern Pacific ...

Risk assessment of heavy metal toxicity through contaminated vegetables from waste water irrigated area of Varanasi, India

In certain areas of Varanasi city, waste water from Dinapur sewage treatment plant is used for irrigating vegetable plots. We quantified the concentrations of heavy metals, viz. Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in soil, vegetables and the waste water used for irrigation. The waste water used for irrigation had the highest concentration of Zn followed by Pb, Cr, Ni, Cu and Cd. Continuous application of...
